Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) system (previous system was known as Occupational Retirement Schemes Ordinance (ORSO)) has been established since December 2000 under Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance (MPFSO).

Both MPF and ORSO schemes are regulated by the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority to ensure the provision of retirement protection for Hong Kong’s working adults aged between 18-65.

Employees can choose whether they would like to join and contribute to the ORSO scheme (if it is provided by their employers) or an MPF scheme.

Except those excluded, all employees and self-employed adults aged between 18 to 65, and are normally residing and working in Hong Kong, are required to enrol in an MPF scheme, including:

Worked for 60 days or more (including full-time or part-time).

Self-employed persons who earn an income from the production/ trade of goods/ services not in the capacity of an employee.
